StormTeam10 Forecast

Ros Runner

A strong cold front passed through the area on this Mother’s Day bringing with it heavy rain, strong gusty winds, and even reports of hail in some areas.  It is not often that you see thunderstorms of this intensity when temperatures are in the 50s.  Just a testimony to how strong this particular weather system is that has been moving through southwest and central Virginia.  Sunday night will bring more scattered showers and the potential for a few more evening thunderstorms.  Winds will be increasing out of the northwest as the night wears along.  A High Wind Warning has been posted for the higher elevations of the New River Valley on Monday where northwest winds during the day could gust upward of 60-65 mph.  Elsewhere, the wind will be quite strong as well with sustained wind speeds 15-25 mph with occasional gusts over 40 mph.  With this low pressure system only slowly pulling away from the area Monday, skies should remain mostly cloudy in many spots and it will be unseasonably cool with highs only in the 50s to low and mid 60s.  There will likely be some periods of sunshine across southern and eastern areas.  You should also be prepared to encounter more scattered showers through the day.  The high winds will diminish by Monday night into the day on Tuesday as high pressure builds back into our region.  Tuesday will be mostly sunny and pleasant with highs in the 70s.  Another cold front approaches the area Wednesday bringing increasing clouds and the chance for showers and thunderstorms later in the day.  A series of low pressure systems look to move in our general direction from Thursday into next weekend.  Although it won’t rain every moment, you can just about count on some showers moving through the area from time to time.  At this point, the highest potential for widespread rainfall looks to be on Thursday.  Temperatures through the period will average near to slightly below normal for this time of year.  Typically, our afternoon high in mid May would be in the mid 70s with the overnight low in the low 50s.  Have a great week!
